I’ve been following Will on Instagram (as Plant Powered Warrior) for a while and I just love seeing photos of his healthy food, plus his gym especially as I used to be a kickboxer many years ago! It’s so wonderful seeing someone pass on their knowledge to others so that they too can benefit. And I especially love that Will thinks we all need to take more time out to chill. Read on for more inspiration.
How long have you been vegan?
I’ve been vegan for about 6 years now.
What made you decide to become vegan?
I was very overweight and I could feel that my health was being compromised. I didn’t like what I was seeing in the mirror and wanted to change that. Like many people I did it for selfish reasons in the beginning. Doing it for the animals and our environment came later on.
What differences have you noticed with your training or lifestyle?
So many benefits it’s hard to list them all. I lost a ton of weight, my energy levels are through the roof, I haven’t been sick in 5 years, and my digestion is on point. From a training perspective my endurance is awesome. My level of focus is one I believed to be unattainable and my recovery is lightning quick.
Tell us about your chosen sport and training. What does it involve?
I’ve recently made the transition to focusing more on body building. I have really enjoyed growing in the gym experimenting with different techniques and workouts. But Muay Thai is my first love, athletically speaking. It is a true martial art that is both beautiful and brutal. A huge part of my vegan journey is due my experience at Sitan Gym. I spend at least 2 days a week training, sparring, or holding pads for fighters at Sitan Gym which is my Muay Thai gym.
How often do you train?
I train 4-5 times a week sometimes twice a day.
Tell us about some of your achievements to date?
My achievements have more to do with helping others lose weight, improve their health or prepare for competition. There was a large period of time where I spent all my time researching and scouring the internet for medical reports. I still do that but now I am focusing on myself and some upcoming goals I want to achieve.
How do family and friends react to your vegan lifestyle?
Everyone is different. Some respect it. Some still don’t understand it and some disagree. I’m always open for a healthy discussion on nutrition.
How do you promote your vegan lifestyle?
I promote it this lifestyle every chance I get, but mainly through my nutrition coaching. That is the whole purpose behind Plant Powered Warrior. I want to show people that their quality of life can improve dramatically if they were to make the change. I like to lead by example and share pieces of my journey on social media as well as in person. This is not for show. This is my lifestyle. I want my brand to influence people to make changes that will benefit their health, animal rights, and our planet.
What do you eat in a typical day?
It depends on the day. I’m working on program right now and charting results. Before this, a normal day would be tons of fruit throughout the day and a mix of raw and steamed vegetables paired with legumes and grains in the evening. Depending on my activity level 2400-2800 calories.
What is your favourite food or recipe?
Give me watermelon, mangoes, bananas, and dates and I’m good. I’m really into plant based whole foods. Cooked food recipe wise, my go to is a batch of lentils paired with sweet potato mash, broccoli, and avocado.
Do you take any supplements?
None. They are just not needed. Everyone’s situation is a little different. For instance in Arizona we get plenty of sunlight pretty much year round so there is no shortage of Vitamin D as long as you get outside 15-20 minutes a day.
What advice would you give to people thinking of going vegan?
My advice is to stop thinking about it and start making the transition now. Even if you don’t go 100% this second, I highly encourage you to begin the process today. The benefits you will experience will speak for themselves and make it easier for you to continue on.
What events or other exciting things do you have planned in the next 12 months?
You definitely will be seeing me at a ton of vegan festivals over the next 12 months. You will also see the evolution of my nutrition coaching with accountability program. We’ve got some cool apparel dropping soon too. Personally I am planning on competing in the next 12 months, most likely bodybuilding. If the stars align correctly, in the ring as well.
What do you do outside of your sport/training for fun?
Chilling. Chilling is vital. I think people should take more time to just chill out. And yoga. Practice yoga. One leads to the other.
Who are your biggest motivators in life?
Besides my family, it has to be life itself. I now understand it’s precious. I feel like in the US and in the UK we are taking steps backwards. These two locations have the highest rates of mortality related to diet. And with these mortality rates come suffering of animals and the environment.
Is there anything else that you’d like to add?
Don’t let loud opinions get in the way of your goals. Don’t get discouraged. Living this lifestyle you will be the minority. You will be tested and questioned. But none of that matters. You must try it for yourself. And once you experience the benefits you will never want to go back. Your body will actually disagree with you if you try. Arm yourself with information and the most nutrient dense foods on the planet. Be a pioneer. Be a Plant Powered Warrior. Be whatever you want to be.
