When you think of Christmas can you smell a memory? Is it the dinner being cooked? The mulled wine on the stove or the mince pies? Christmas is often full of fragrant memories and essential oils can definitely be a memory trigger for a lot of people.
Essential oils are also great to use during the festive season as a natural fragrance or to calm the house amongst the chaos. Here are my favourite oils to use during this season.
Frankincense is the King Of Oils and has a strong Christmas connection as it was one of the gifts for baby Jesus. It is also known as liquid gold!
It is a very relaxing oil and is often used in meditation and yoga classes so would be a perfect oil to be diffusing with excitable children. It will also help the adults in the house too! It can provide soothing support throughout the entire body which is just what is required during these busy holiday times.
2. Lavender Peace (Calming Blend)
Lavender Peace is another fantastic oil that is perfect for calming emotions, which may be running high at Christmas time! It has a calming fragrance and can help lessen feelings of tension. Add a couple of drops to an Epsom salt bath (diluted with an appropriate carrier oil) or rub onto the bottom of your feet or down your spine for a restful night.
dōTERRA also suggest to diffuse at a family reunion when tensions may run high: no better time than Christmas!
Balance promotes a whole body sense of relaxation and creates a grounding experience. When life gets too much (for adults or children) apply balance to the bottom of your feet to evoke feelings of tranquillity and balance. It can also be added to an epsom salt bath and works really well with lavender peace. Don’t forget to dilute with an appropriate carrier oil. If you have a long car trip to see the family over Christmas, it is also great diffused in the car to keep the driver and passengers calm!
4. Digestzen (Digestion Blend)
Digestzen needs to be in every home this Christmas because nearly everyone over indulges on the wrong kind of food! It helps soothe stomach discomfort, reduce bloating, gas and occasional indigestion. Use with fractionated coconut oil for a soothing abdominal massage.
Peppermint is one of the best energy boosters! Rub some onto your temples (diluted with a carrier oil) as a morning pick me up or diffuse in the afternoon with wild orange for an invigorating and joyful natural energy booster.
Emotionally, it can help you re-discover the joy of being alive. It can also help reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion (especially great to know at Christmas!) If you’ve been on your feet all day add a couple of drops of peppermint to a foot tub and soak your feet in the evening once the children have gone to bed! Use a carrier oil to disperse the oil and for a more moistorising soak. If you live in a hot climate over the Christmas period, add a couple of drops of peppermint to a spray bottle with some water and keep on hand in the fridge. Use liberally over bottom of feet or face (with eyes closed) when you start to get too hot. Add some salt and carrier oil to disperse the essential oil.
6. Clove Bud
One of my favourite Christmas oils, to me it just smells like Christmas in a bottle! It is stimulating and energising and also great to add to Christmas foods! It soothes and supports the nervous system and helps support the immune system when the body is under stress-which can definitely be the case during the festive season.
7. Console (Comforting Blend)
Remember that Christmas can be a lonely time for some people and can trigger unhappy memories. Console can help comfort the soul and evoke feelings of hope. It is great diffused in the bedroom or a couple of drops added to the pillow for a restful night’s sleep.
Do you have a long trip (plane, bus, car etc) to see family? Ginger can help assist you if you feel nauseous on the journey. Add a couple of drops to your hand or wrist and inhale as required. Don’t forget to dilute in a carrier oil when you add to the skin. It may also help to reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion if diluted and rubbed onto belly.
Ginger is also great to add to food as it provides a spicey, warming flavour.
9. On-Guard (Protective Blend)
On-Guard just smells like Christmas in a bottle with the combination of wild orange, clove bud, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere and are prone to bugs at this time of year, on-guard is great to diffuse or add to the bottom of feet (with a carrier oil) to support the immune system. It is also wonderful to clean the bathroom or kitchen with and the clove helps combat any mould spots that may be present.
10. Past Tense (Tension Blend)
Feel like your head is ready to explode after running around so much ? Past Tense helps reduce head tension and with easy application from a roller bottle it should be in everyone’s hand bag! It can reduce stress and anxious feelings as well as easing tension in neck and shoulders. Have a long drive home after visiting the family? Massage into shoulders, neck and back for a cooling, soothing sensation. It is also great massaged into temples (being very careful of the eyes) to help concentration during a long road trip.
Note: I split mine into two roller bottles and dilute with fractionated coconut oil as it is very strong used neat and I do not recommend this.
Why not also try these diffuser blends? It really brings the Christmas smell into the home.
